Ahoy!

This is Anders admiring himself in his pirate costume before heading out to his first "pirate" birthday party. Aaarrrggghhh. Ahoy, Matey!!

Life with Pirates

I know Jakob is thinking "who is that??!!"

His hand gets captured.
But he's still okay.
And now is thinking "HELP!"
I think Anders is about to throw him overboard!
Ander so loved his costme, he refused to take off his pirate shirt tonight. He is sleeping in it now. It reminded me of that Jerry Seinfeld show about the pirate shirt.

While we are talking teeth....

Oh, and while we are talking teeth,
Jakob just got two!
His bottom front teeth just arrived!
I think it's front teeth week at our house.

Ugh

Well, it was bound to happen.
Anders took a mighty fall.
He actually fell out of our bed...while he was asleep. He smashed his mouth/front tooth.
It happened at 5 in the morning, and there was no blood. After he was done crying he fell back asleep.
All seemed well.
However, when I went to pick him up at school the next day, and as I sat there watching him as he listened to a story, I noticed he didn't quite look like himself. Like someone who shaves off his moustache, or isn't wearing gtheir glasses, I couldn't put my finger on it at first.
Then I figured out his upper lip was swollen, but not at the lip, more between his nose and his lip. When we got home, Anna looked in his mouth with a flashlight and he had a huge bruise on his gum above his lip, and his tooth was loose. Ugh. A call was made to his dentist. It was after 6 so I had to call him at his home. The dentist was reassuring and helpful. Swelling doesn't happen right away but by 24 hours later it is at it's worst.

In the morning Anna took Anders to the dentist, for his second visit.
Yes, one of his front teeth was pushed forward in the fall, was a bit loose.
Hopefully it will heal and tighten back up. It worries me. We have to keep an eye on his tooth and chewing habits over the next month. I really hope his tooth will be okay. I sort of can't even think about it not being okay.

In the meantime, he doesn't quite look like himself, talk like himself, eat like himself, but he still plays like himself.

Family Contra Dance

Oh my!! We had a blast yesterday afternoon. We went to a family contra dance at a local elementary school. Fiddles, manodlins, a caller, and tons of families and kids all dancing together. Anders was terrific at following the directions of the caller. Amazing really. We promenaded, dosey-doed, and swung our partners. Anna had Jakob in the baby bjorn, and he too partook in a fabulous, simply fabulous afternoon of dancing. I can't wait until we can do it again!!!!

Delayed Gratification

Anders wanted apple cider last night before dinner.
We don't usually give him cider or juice in the evening, just in the morning.
But when I looked in the fridge there was just a tiny bit of cider left in the gallon.
I thought, "What the heck, why not?"
So I poured it into a glass.
Before giving it to Anders I told him this was all we had left, so if he drank it he wouldn't have any cider left in the morning.
I told him he could choose to drink it now, or wait and save it for the morning.

What would you guess a 3 year old cider lover would choose?

Anders said, "Let's save it."

WOW.

Play is Serious Business

Play is essential to the life of the universe.

--Robert Jackson and Dermot Killingley, Listening to Hindus
Just by looking at these snapshots you can tell how serious this business of play is.
However, you are missing the squeals of delight he shouted after hiding and being found behind the white blanket, and the gulping noises made by the lizards as they ate a new crop of fresh squeezed playdough worms. Or the self-talk as Anders put each wood piece into a hole, naming them Mama, Mema, Papa, brother, sister, grandma, "the family."
Oh I do love this aspect of parenting, and I do honor the importance of play in all of our lives.

Some Notable Moments in Our House

Last night I made up a bed time story for Anders about a squirrel in a tree -(which of course he wanted to be named Anders) and his little bird friend. After I was done he said "One more story!"

I agreed to one more short story.

I started to make up a second story about the color blue, but Anders quickly stopped me and commanded, "NO, not that! Tell me a different story with the same characters."

Who taught him the word characters?!!

I mean it. He is just 3 years old!

But we digress...

At school the other day, Anders took his diaper off while peeing in the toilet. He does this task by himself at school, so no one noticed he took off his diaper.
That is until a short time later when a poop showed up on the classroom floor.
Luckily it hadn't been stepped on.

Anders response: "I felt it come down the track and roll down my leg."

Clearly we are working on the whole potty training thing around here.
You win some, you lose some.

Gotta Love That Hat

Jakob, like Anders, looks good in hats. This one is a real winner, as modeled here by our little guy. As soon as I put this hat on his head he broke out in this wild grin.
